Why is Everything Pink?

Alex and Phyllis Madonna co-created the Madonna Inn with fantasy in mind; they wanted guests to feel both comfortable and wowed from the moment they walked through the door. Pink was chosen as a staple of the brand because it’s a fun and uplifting color. Alex also thought that Phyllis looked her most beautiful when wearing shades of pink - it was his favorite color on her!

Why is every room different?

When Alex began to conceptualize his Inn, he knew he wanted to create something extraordinary. Though it was more “economical” to create a hotel with identical rooms, he thought that idea sounded boring; his dream was to build a hotel that was unforgettable. (He also famously stated that “if every room was different, (he) could never make the same mistake twice!”)

Though Alex initially hired a professional interior designer to furnish the guest rooms, he ultimately looked to his lovely wife, Phyllis, to plan and complete the styling of the 110 themed rooms. Phyllis was without formal training, but had a sense of style and creative spirit that Alex trusted would see her through the endeavor! What a team.

Are Alex and Phyllis still living?

Phyllis is still alive and well at 92 years old. She lives locally and visits the Inn as often as she can. She is fully retired now and loves spending time with family, dear friends, and her kitty: Saffron.

Alex passed in April 2004, though his legend and positive impact on the San Luis Obispo community lives on.

Is the hotel named after the singer, Madonna?

No. We do see the obvious connection to the Queen of Pop, however there is no affiliation. Madonna Inn is named after the surname of it’s creators - Alex and Phyllis Madonna.

Alex and Phyllis married on December 28th, 1949 at Little Church of the West in Las, Vegas, Nevada.

Do you ship your cakes?

Nope. While we do ship some of our other delicious baked-goods, our cakes are too fragile and perishable to withstand long-distance, sustainable travel. Until your next visit, we wish you the sweetest of Pink Champagne dreams… and maybe a box of cookies.

Speaking of Pink Champagne, will your famous cake get me tipsy?

No, ma’am! Contrary to it’s namesake, Pink Champagne cake actually doesn’t contain any Champagne at all. We add a splash of Brandy to our Bavarian Cream for flavor, but not nearly enough to cause intoxication.
